Christian Guild to permit Alcohol
At the Company’s Annual General Meeting on Saturday 9th June 2007 the Board of Christian Guild announced that it would be permitting the sale of alcoholic drinks with meals at one of its hotels on a trial basis, once the necessary licences have been obtained. The hotel selected is Lindors Country House Hotel in the Wye Valley, which is now recognised for the high quality of service that it offers. The move follows detailed consideration of the feedback from over 5,500 customers over the last two years and a recent survey of shareholders, guests, hosts and employees. This is a change of policy after more than 80 years of alcohol-free environment.
Commenting on the decision, Managing Director, Kevin Mantle said, "We are piloting this move in response to customer feedback and because we have had to turn away ever increasing amounts of our core Christian sector business because of our traditional restriction. We recognise that attitudes to alcohol divide Christian practice. However, as a Christian company we are committed to serving the wider Christian market whilst respecting our Methodist roots. As times have changed, so has the Methodist Church’s official attitude to alcohol and our Management and staff will ensure fully responsible attitudes in serving guests”.
We recognise that this decision will disappoint some of our long-standing and loyal customers but we assure them that we remain fully committed to the provision of Christian fellowship and upholding the faith in all we do.
